 "Future -- A Fascinating Challenge"
Nowadays it is common to say that we are living in a time of great turbulence. A time of rapid technological, economic and political changes, which are happening ever more often at the inter-national level. A time of collapsing societal structures. A time, when our planet is shrinking day by day. A time of environmental, economic, and social threats. A time of great possibilities brought to us by the developments of the Information society – and the birth of the Biosociety.
The future is full of uncertainty. Much more than in the past it involves trend breaks, sudden new phenomena and developments, which are beyond our capabilities to influence. What we can do is to be aware of them as far as possible, and to make the best of our own future. It involves adopt-ing an active attitude towards the future, the one of governing our own future. In futures studies, several different methodologies and approaches have been developed to do that. ‘We’ can be a company, a municipality, a public organisation, a non-governmental organisation, etc. Ulti-mately a family or an individual making conscious decisions about her/his own future.
Futures Studies Mannermaa Ltd. is an enterprise specialized in futures work: creat-ing and working with scenarios, strategies, forecasts, futures barometers and futures studios. It is a modern networking enterprise of the Information society. Around its core knowledge and know-how it collects extra expertise needed for each of the projects carried out together with its clients.
The core expertise is based on 20 years experience in futures field: on academic futures research (theory, methodology), international activities (conferences, articles in journals like the FUTURES), and on practical applications like scenario and strategy projects with several customers both in the private and public sectors. The collaborating partners include the Finnish government, the Parliament of Finland, several Ministries, companies, municipalities, universi-ties, and other organisations.
